The INNATURE Demo Case 1 Tampere Meadow Laboratory deals with meadow-like habitats in sub-urban areas in Tampere, Finland. Meadows will be implemented in Nekala and Härmälänranta neighbourhoods with the aim to increase biodiversity and habitats for endangered species, improve residents access to urban nature and develop places to pause and encounter others along flow-oriented pedestrian environments.
Special focus is on supporting an endangered moth and butterfly species that exist in dry and sunny places, which have been typical in the historical Nekala small industry area in the past but as a result of recent urban development have decreased. Härmälänranta on the other hand is a newly developed residential area, with recently developing community and sparce local nature habitats so far.
The meadow habitats are sown by INNATURE partners and local residents with seeds that are collected from nearby areas. Suitable conditions for Trifolium medium, the host plant of the moth Anacompisis fuscella, will be searched and monitored as citizen-science in public areas as well as some private gardens in Nekala by sensors and a mobile game application. The meadows will take several years to develop, and during that time they need a fence to protect the growth. The sustainability, inclusiveness and beauty of the meadow paths are discussed and reimagined with the local communities through a temporary text-based participatory artwork installation in Härmälänranta, which focuses on the soundscapes of nature as means of creating community, identity and memories.
